REDO of "The First Charter of Virginia" Rhetorical Analysis

The author of this primary document is not specified. However, from my understanding, I think that the authors are King James and his Successors because it says in the document that these people, as part of the council, were his "subjects" and they were to be "humble suitors." The audience of this piece are the people who are colonizing to the New Land. The Europeans, who King James addressed to colonize on this land, settled on there to make it prosper and establish a new society.

Throughout this document the tone was very authoritative and informative. It really stresses the laws and restrictions within this new colony, and when you are trying to establish a new government, being authoritative is important. Also, with this document being so authoritative and strict, it gave it a dull voice throughout the piece.

The main idea of this document was establishing colonization in Virginia. The people who established these colonies (the First and Second Colonies) claimed this land, assigning land by latitude and longitude as the dimensions for their rightful properties. Councils were also established, it was their own government which made laws, currency, military and trade. The appeal to authority was this ethos in this document because it seemed as though King James and his “Subjects” wanted this land more for a personal gain. With this in effect, the hierarchies obtain (by their restrictions) amounts of the settler’s findings, almost like a tax. I think the “Successors” are the pathos since the ruler(s) will give the impression to the people that they are credible and their decisions are worthy. I also believe that the Successors are the logos because they would have had to use logical persuasion to persuade other people to collaborate into the new colonies. As a leader you have to be trustworthy, persuasive and credible which is obviously what the settler’s thought King James and his "Subjects" were.

The First Charter of Virginia: Rhetorical Analysis

From my understanding I believe that the author of this document is Lukin. I think that his audience's are the Christians and the people who are colonizing to the new lands. The way that this document was written, in my opinion, was dull and very repetitive. The document always repeated "Plantation and Habitation" and "...the Lands, Woods, Soil, Grounds, Havens, Ports, Rivers, Mines, Minerals, Marshes, Waters..." It seemed as though there was little "excitement" in the voice of the piece which, to me, made it dull. The main idea of this document was establishing a colonization. The people who established these colonies ( the first and second) claimed this land, assigning land by latitude and longitude as the dimensions for their rightful properties. Councils were also established, it was their own government which made laws, currency, military and trade.

I think that the laws of this colony are the ethos because they represented more of a restriction which, dependign on which ones you broke, could be an emotional time. The pathos are the Successors, the people who ruled the colonies because they are the the credibility of the lands. The Successors establishing a new Colony, I believe, is the logos because you have to be logical to make a colony unite together so that your will not break.

The Cruelties of the Spaniards Committed in America

My own view is that the Spaniards found the land of San Salvador contained with natives and others, and their first thought was to take control over the land for wealth. Though I concede that the Spaniards were doing what they were instructed to do, in the name of their own God and commerce, I still maintain that they were murdering the Native population simply out of greed and personal gain. For example, when the Natives tried to fight back the Spaniards tortured and killed them in unspeakeable ways. Although some might object that the " Humility and Patience of the Inhabinants..." promoted the actions of the Spaniards. I reply that the Natives were victims of being humble and passive people. This issue is important because all people have certain rights to their way of life and other cultures inference can destroy it.

My Writing Philosophy

My writing philosophy is that writing should be free. It should be free from the standard way that it is always taught. Free from boredom and no effect. Your writing has to be who you are, it has to have heart and soul. Otherwise, I believe it is not writing at all. It should show people a glimpse of who you are, even though you may be writing about something completely different from the subject of "you." We may not be great at writing however, as you write more and more it will only improve. It doesn't have to be perfect but it does need to have structure, organization and relative content. Don't be affraid to try different styles and techniques in your writing, it cannot be incorrect. Writing is an expression of who you are,and who you will become.

English Composition As a Happening by Charles Deemer

Charles Deemer’s main idea and thought is that our education in schools should be modified. I think he stresses how important student/teacher bonds are, that they should really connect on one level and understand each other. Our education should be more interactive and acknowledged by everyone; student and teacher. Deemer also expresses that the “happening” should be based on opinions and participations to make the students educational experience more complex. With the education more complex they learn something more out of it. There has to be a meaning to our education so we can actually apply it outside of school, instead of learning meaningless things that take up our educational time. I think that if we all want this change and actually want to have useful education that we can make Deemer’s “happening” happen.

P.S.E.C. Essay

In the U.S. alone, more than 400,000 people are living with HIV/Aids. Amounts are steadily increasing year by year, more so within the last two decades. In the 90’s, the promotion of education regarding HIV/Aids was the hot topic. Now many people are getting the impression that HIV/Aids is not an epidemic anymore, since education and promotion has gradually decreased.

The numbers of people diagnosed with HIV/Aids are approximately 37,000 and death rates have amplified to 15,000. With numbers increasing this rapidly, I believe that education about HIV/Aids should be expanded on. Though more and more research is being done, research efforts are not being shared publicly. Education throughout schools is an important place for this information to come from, since youths are becoming more infected. However, from personal experience through my school, I did not learn much about HIV/Aids at all. I believe that schools should expand on this topic because if we don’t share the information to the younger generation, especially ones with no access to info, they won’t understand how serious the problem really is.

One in four teenagers are infected with some type of sexually transmitted infection; one type is HIV/Aids. Education about HIV/Aids is the key ingredient to reducing numbers; numbers of deaths and diagnoses. If we don’t educate, no one can learn and I believe that everyone should be educated on problems within our world.
